What is an extract? An extract is a collection of the essential oils found in a plant. At Boones Harvest we focus on hemp extracts. This includes not only the resin, but canninbinoids, terpenes (the aromatic oils), and flavanoids (what gives the plant its distinct colors). These major components of the extract all have studied medicinal features which taken together can possibly provide amazing synergy (or working together with different properties that provide an overall healing effect).

What is a terpene? An aromatic, volatile liquid that is found mainly in plants that makes up most of a plant's essential oils. A terpene not only provides a distinct smell and taste for a plant, but also has defensive properties. Plants use terpenes to either attract pollinators and to ward off predators. A particular Persimmon tree in China greatly emits the terpene Pinene to attract ladybeetles which in turn controls the predatory insects of the tree. Terpenes also have studied medicinal benefits such as being antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer.

What is a flavanoid?A type of plant pigment that operates similary to a terpene but with the use of color rather than smell and taste. Flavanoids give a plant a distinct and vibrant color profile used to either attract animals to eat their fruit and to disperse their seeds or to attract pollinators in flowers. Like terpenes, flavanoids also have studied medicinal properties such as being antibacterial and acting as antioxdiants.

What is a cannabinoid?A chemical substance, regardless of structure or origin, that attaches to the cannabinoid receptors of the body and brain (also known as your Endocannabinoid System or ECS). There are two main endocannabinoids (meaning inside) your body makes : anandamide and 2-archidonyl glycerol (2-AG) Your ECS and endocannbinoids help to regulate your body by responding to stimuli. A phytocannabinoid means the cannabinoid came from a plant and cannabis is the only plant that produces phytocannabinioids. Phytocannabinoids, such as CBD and CBG, have been studied to show how they interact with and aid our ECS.
